After a week-long battle for supremacy, the Municipality of Daanbantayan came up on top as it was  crowned the overall champions in the 2015 Cebu Provincial Sports and Cultural Meet yesterday in Dalaguete town, southern Cebu.

Athletes from this town at the northern tip of Cebu bagged 57 gold medals, 40 silvers and 24 bronze medals to come out victorious.

This means that athletes from Daanbantayan will make up the core of the Cebu Province team that will compete in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet.

Leading the medal haul were athletes from the Daanbantayan elementary squad, who finished with 30 golds, 21 silvers and seven bronze medals. The secondary team added  27 gold medals, 19 silvers and 17 bronzes.

The Municipality of Liloan came in far second in the overall standings as it finished with 27 golds, 24 silvers and 30 bronze medals.

Liloan got almost half of its medals from its gymnastics team, which garnered 13 gold medals, 12 silvers and 10 bronze medals.

Also putting up a great performance was San Fernardo town, which finished third overall with 17 gold medals, 11 silvers and nine bronze medals.

Completing the top five are the Municipality of Sta Fe,  which had a 15-10-5 (gold-silver-bronze) haul, and  the Municipality of Bantayan,   finished with 14 golds, 12 silvers and 12 bronzes.

Team Cebu City’s swimming team was off to a slow start in the Batang Pinoy National Finals, which kicked off yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The Niños managed just two silver medals at the pool, a far cry from the eight-gold and eight-silver haul of the leading Quezon City team. Cebu Province also made waves at the start of swimming competition yesterday, hauling three gold medals.

Raven Faith Alcoseba led Cebu Province’s strong start as she topped the girls’ 13-15 400-meter Long Course (LC) freestyle event with a time of 4:50.19.  She also ruled the 13-15 200-meter backstroke event with a time of 2:30.42. Rian Mario Tirol, meanwhile, added a gold in the boys’ 13-15 50-meter breaststroke (32.52 secs).

Gold medalists for Quezon City were Miguel Barreto (12 under 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle), Patrick Galvez (13-15 400m freestyle), Keane Cedric Ting (13-15 200m freestyle),  Rafael Barreto (13-15 100m freestyle), Phillip Joaquin Yu (13-15 200m butterly), and the girls quartet of Camille Lauren Buico, Sarah Ashley Alvina, Marjorie Mangulat and Gabrielle Mica Relampagos (15 under 200m medley relay). The Quezon City squad of Armand Pierre Chan, Kyle Barraza, Rafael Barreto and Michael Barreto also dominated the boys’ 15 under 200m medley relay.

Swimming events will continue today and tomorrow.

Meanwhile, PSC Chairman Ricardo “Richie” Garcia said Cebu City did a good job in its grand opening ceremony yesterday.

He said Cebu may have broke the record of the previous National Finals of Batang Pinoy in terms of attendance of athletes and teams.

“According to my staff, Cebu broke the record, but I have to clarify it first,” he said. “But I am confident that Cebu broke the record.”

Garcia also said that top performers in this multi-sporting meet for athletes aged 18 years below may have a chance to be included in the national training pool.

“There will be scouts and representatives from different National Sports Associations (NSA) here in Cebu as well as Philippine Olympic Committee scouts who will monitor athletes who are qualified to be included in the Philippine National Team training pool.”

Provincial Board Member and veteran basketball coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba was present in behalf of Gov. Hilario Davide III.

In his speech, he emphasized that sports is not just about playing but also learning values.

“In sports, you learn discipline and character building,” the multi-titled basketball coach of the Southwestern University Cobras told the young athletes. “All the glory is not in winning. The best glory is about falling down and getting up.”

He told Cebu Daily News that his message was to inspire the youth to grow as matured athletes in the future.

Dried mangoes for the Infanta

ON May 1994 Cecilia and I together with Rosario Muñoz went to Manila for the inauguration of Instituto Cervantes, located at Leon Guinto corner Estrada in Malate. It was right in front of St. Scholastica’s College. It brought me back memories of when we lived there, the street being called Pennsylvania at that time, in 1951 and 1952.

Guest of honor was Her Royal Highness the Infanta Elena, eldest daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, and second in line to the throne after her brother Don Felipe Prince of Asturias.

The Infanta was tall and slim, and everyone noticed she looked better in person than in the photos published in the press. We had the opportunity to talk to her and tell her about Cebu, how important it was for Spanish history.

Next day there was a large reception hosted by Spanish Ambassador Herminio Morales and his wife Maria Dolores at the embassy residence in Forbes Park for the Spanish community to meet the Infanta.

We brought several bags filled with Cebu dried mangoes and gave them to the kitchen staff, perchance to be included in the buffet. The Infanta moved about greeting everyone and acceeding to be photographed except when she was drinking (a diet cola) or earting.

Among the Cebuanos present were Ingrid Sala Santamaria, Maia Franco, Chinggay Utzurrum and Nelia Neri. I spotted Georgina Padilla y Zobel de Mac-Crohon.

“Hello, remember me?” I greeted her.

“The voice is familiar,” she answered, and then I told her to recall the summer of 1959, a good 35 years ago, at the home of Javier Ortoll, my best friend in high school. I had lost most of the thick blonde hair I had then. Of course, I looked different.

“We must not lose contact,” she said, and we exchanged addresses and telephone numbers. Most of the time she lived in Madrid, and in San Sebastian during the summer season. She sent me an invitation to the next awarding ceremonies of the Premio Zobel.

Many of the guests at the reception for the Infanta left at 7 p.m. and went to the Meralco theater where the Infanta would attend the performance by Philippine
Ballet Theatre of Manuel de Fallas’s El Amor Brujo,” choreographed by Eric V. Cruz. Minnie Osmeña sat in the same row as the Infanta.

Other activities filled up the Infanta’s agenda, including a trip to Boracay. Our dried mangoes from Cebu were included in one of the picnic hampers prepared by the ambassador’s staff. “She liked them very much,” Consul Jose Ricardo Gomez – Acebo told me a few days later.

I returned to Cebu to face the problem of the Spaniard detained at the Lapu-lapu City Jail, for possession of drugs and trying to give himself a fix of shabu on board a plane before departure. He was not in luck as the judge assigned to his case went on vacation.

I contacted my good friend, lawyer Alice Canonoy Morada, who found an efficient and effective solution to the problem. The Spaniard was convicted of the charges and subsequently deported.

Ambassador Morales was very impressed and asked me how much I had spent. I told him that I was not expecting to be refunded. It was enough reward to be rid of the problem. Not bad for a neophyre honorary consul.

Since 1991 the Salvador and Pilar Sala Foundation led by Ingrid Sala Santamaria and her sister in law Susan Montenegro Sala had embarked on ten-year musical development program. The result was the Cebu Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) which in 1994 was a little over a year old.

The CYSO activities gave Cebu its golden era of music. Cebu’s music lovers were treated to to various concerts and recitals held at the Sala ancestral home in Gorordo Avenue, school auditorium, SM City Cebu, or at hotel ballroom and/or lobbies.

Noted artists, some of them well known in the international scene came to Cebu to conduct seminars or workshops. One such was the famous conductor Yaakov Bergman who was well known for his interpretation of Mozart’s compositions.

Ingrid was able to invite him to Cebu in July and he acceded with pleasure. For the concert of the CYSO he arranged the Philippine national anthem as if it had been a work of Mozart. The audience swooned when it opened the program.

I was sitting next to Ingrid on front row and as the CYSO played I was impressed at how the group sounded. I had never heard them play so well, and neither had Ingrid, who realized that the orchestra members were reacting to the brilliant conducting of Yaakov Bergman.

It all had to do with the training the CYSO had been receiving through Ingrid’s efforts. She whispered to me,” You know, they are ahead of us.” From then on we knew we had a great potential in the CYSO.

In August 1994 the Arts Council presented the full length ballet “Giselle” for the first time in Cebu, performed by Ballet Philippines. It was held at the cultural center of the University of San Carlos.

The venue was not enclosed and birds flew in and out during the daytime. At night, the bats who made it their home, also flew in and out. That gave the first act of “Giselle” a surreal quality, and more so to the second act which is set in a graveyard.

In September the Arts Council brought back famous pianist Cecile Licad for a recital at the ballroom of the Cebu Plaza Hotel (now the Marco Polo Plaza). It was a full house, and thus a monumental success, although there are some who will says that Miss Licad is over rated, Be that as it may, the Arts Council led by Maia Franco, scored quite a hit.

For the first time in my life, and at the age of 52, I appeared in a fashion show as a model, when the Sarabia Optical was inaugurated at SM City Cebu. I had to wear a tuxedo which I had just ordered from Infini for a Chaine des Rotisseurs gala.

All I had to do was pace the area several times, wearing different pairs of eyeglasses. Modelling, too, were Mayen Tan who had organized the event, Mariecor Salas Ding, and Bunny Pages.

I have been described as portly, which is a tactful reference to obesity, but I must say that I looked good in my tuxedo. To achieve the effect when I had my measurements taken I striped down to my underwear and told the tailor to use his tape measure.

The year 1994 ended on a sad note. The extension of the Spanish Embassy’s Centro Cultural was shut down. The functions of such centers had been taken up the newly established Instituto Cervantes which required a certain equipment and a very skilled staff.

But the classes in the Spanish language continued, back at the Casino Español de Cebu. Rosario Muñoz and the rest of the teachers under the aegis of Amigos de España, formed a group which functioned satisfactorily.

On a happy note there was the grand opening of Ayala Center Cebu. I was one of those asked to cut a ribbon at Ayala Metro department store and supermarket, by Grace Rosal who was taking care of their public relations.

Cecilia had spend several months dieting and lost 55 pounds. She looked great, or rather slim, and Mrs. Lulu Cuna of Rustan’s thought she’d be good as a model, along with Amparito Lhuillier, focusing on their ready to wear collection with the Oleg Cassini brand.

The photo coverage would appear in the pages of the Freeman’s lifestyle section, “Glitz & Guts.” The pity was that the pictures, then in black and white, did not come out sharp enough to do credit to the wardrobe.

Radisson Cebu’s Blu Sapphire

ONCE in a long while, Cebu society goes formal and dresses up to the nines.

The bejeweled invitation to Radisson Blu Cebu’s Blu Sapphire, a gala dinner marking its fifth year on Nov. 10, was sent earlier than usual to give ample time for guests to prepare for the dress code: long gowns for ladies and suits for men. It was a formal affair, fittingly for an occasion that marks the five-star hotel’s brilliant five years. President of Hotels and Conventions Elizabeth Sy takes pride in the milestone and was at the forefront of the celebration.

BLU Sapphire

BLU Sapphire

The glittering event started with the Christmas Tree Lighting at the Lobby to herald the holiday season. The elegantly clad guests were then directed to the Santa Maria Grand Ballroom. A five-course dinner creatively prepared by the award-winning culinary team led by Executive Chef Roberto Kunitz and a classical gala concert featuring the country’s brightest talents promised to be an unforgettable evening of food, wine and music.

To set the mood of the evening, the 17-year-old saxophonist Joshua Espinosa filled the ballroom with favorite songs from the 60s that complemented a gala dinner to celebrate five fruitful years in the hospitality industry.

Arrogant Frog Sauvignon Blanc was poured into our wine glasses. For openers, our palates were totally amused with Canard Bleu Royal—blu crab with mango on brioche and foie gras praline, a classic French amuse bouche by Sous Chef Garry de Guia.  This was followed by Celeste at its Finest, a light flavorful Chinese soup of braised lobster in pumpkin and carrot medley, which is a masterpiece of Chinese Chef, Aik Liang Tan.

Indian Chef Hira Tiwan spiced up our middle course with his The Cerulean Delight, tandoor-cooked lapu-lapu fillet with vegetable biryani, peppery poppadom cracker and molecular cucumber yogurt raita and salmon caviar. To refresh our palates for the main course, Azure Blend, a sorbet made of Blu Bolt-curacao with sparkling wine was served.

Executive Chef Roberto Kunitz’s Midnight Revelry—sous vide US certified Angus beef tenderloin served with potato soufflé with organic carrot puree and aged balsamic onion was a delight. The sous vide method really renders the meat tender and juicy with the flavors intact. Australian Renmano Chairman Selection Shiraz paired well with the tenderloin. It was a lengthy, luxuriously delicious dinner we were all enjoying. The jewel of the evening, Blu Sapphire was a fitting finale to the five-course dinner. Pastry Chef Allan Barrios meticulously created a dessert of bittersweet chocolate sphere filled with Dilmah Earl Grey chocolate mousse with strawberry rocks, Dilmah lychee, almond jelly and rose petal. We broke the caramelized sugar covering the chocolate sphere using the chocolate hammer, to enjoy the mousse.

CELESTE at Its Finest

CELESTE at Its Finest

After the exquisite dinner, a classical gala concert by the country’s esteemed and multi-awarded soprano Rachelle Gerodias together with South Korean baritone Byeong-in Park accompanied by the Cebu Philharmonic Orchestra enthralled us with songs from opera Carmen and musical Phantom of Opera. The Philippine Ballet Theatre’s Regina Magbitang and Peter Lloyd San Juan pirouetted and danced to their enchanting songs.

The acclaimed Mandaue Children’s Choir rendered songs while models cat-walked to show the creations of fashion designers Philip Rodriguez, Jun Escario, Philip Tampus, Joyce Mau and Ixa Escario.

Cebuano volunteers feed street dwellers

If there’s one person who’s not going to sleep hungry tonight, doesn’t that make a difference?” Jill Enriquez, one of the founders of a Cebu-based nonprofit organization quipped as her group filled cups with arroz caldo (porridge).

Ten groups of Cebuano volunteers fed indigent Cebuanos last October 16-18 in observance of World Food Day.

This year’s celebration had the theme, “Social Protection and Agriculture.”

But as new volunteers, they are still meeting their second goal, which is to encourage other well-to-do Cebuanos to go out and feed the less fortunate.

The volunteers prepared spaghetti, arroz caldo, fried chicken, rice, porridge, cookies, drinks and other food for the street dwellers.

Some drove around the city to distribute food, while others chose to set up their feeding stations in the vicinity of the Redemptorist church and in barangay Tejero.

Each group took photos of the food recipients and shared it on Facebook with the hashtags #IcareAboutMyCommunity, #IcareAboutHunger, #FeedTheHungry and #VolunteerinCebu.

Enriquez said that “in Barrio Luz itself, there are more than 80 malnourished children, but many people are overfed.”

In their previous feeding activities, Volunteer in Cebu limited their beneficiaries to children below 12 years old. But after seeing mothers lining up to get food, they fed whoever was hungry.

Having given aid to a number of victims of Yolanda and the 2013 earthquake in Bohol, the Cebuano volunteers were advised to teach the people how to fish so they would not rely on others’ help.

John Monteith, a volunteer, admitted that their Feed the Hungry campaign “cannot really address food poverty, but it still makes a difference.”

“At least if you can feed them, their way of thinking will change. If you eat, you’ll gain energy and you’ll be more productive,” Monteith said.

Not only do they serve food to the hungry Cebuanos every October, volunteers become sources of information when share about the food poverty they observed in an area they passed by with Enriquez or a veteran volunteer, and arrange a feeding activity.

To continue their campaign, the Volunteer in Cebu plans to provide lunch to 58 undernourished pupils of Dapdap Elementary School in San Remigio town, northern Cebu.

Enriquez said they are going to feed these students for 120 days, as advised by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

By doing this, their food intake will improve their Body Mass Index, and thereby boost their nutritional status to normal or acceptable standards.

OBO readies own report; SM Seaside City Cebu has partial occupancy permit

The newly opened SM Seaside City Cebu mall has violated the building code for constructing its main entrance stairs and plant boxes within eight meters from the Cebu South Coastal Road, a Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) report showed.

DPWH-7 legal staff chief Brando Ray Raya, in his report submitted to DPWH-7 regional director Ador Canlas, recommended that SM be compelled to correct the violations and conform to the National Building Code of the Philippines.

Raya’s report stated that the plant boxes and stairs, drainage and paved driveway, and the flag poles went beyond SM’s property line and are within the coastal road’s right-of-way, a violation of Section 23 of the Revised Philippine Highway Act (Presidential Decree 17).

Because SM failed to comply with the setback requirements, the new mall “exceeded the Allowable Maximum Building Footprint,” the report added.

SM’s violations include: failure to comply with the front of lot setback requirements; not enough maneuvering spaces within its property lines for MyBus and other vehicles; encroachment of the coast road’s right-of-way; and exceeding the allowable maximum building footprint, or the space that a building may occupy after satisfying setback, yard and court requirements.

Copies of the report were sent to the Cebu City Office of the Building Official (OBO) and SM.

REVIEW

Assistant Building Official Architect Florante Catalan said he still has to review the DPWH findings. A partial occupancy permit has been issued to SM Seaside City, which was opened to the public on November 27.

“I will review it (DPWH report) first and compare it to the report of our geodetic engineer. We will give an update after I finish reviewing and evaluating it,” Catalan said.

He said Engr. Bernabe Pateno, one of their geodetic engineers, is working on OBO’s report and recommendations.

OBO representatives joined DPWH-7 and SM officials in a joint inspection of SM Seaside City on November 10, following SM’s application for clearance to cut trees along the Cebu South Coastal Road.

The report stated that several meetings between DPWH-7 and SM have been held since January last year to ensure that the mall would not hamper access to and from the Cebu South Coastal Road.

SM was ordered in May last year to cease and desist from using the roads leading to the coastal road and told to comply with all requirements.

The report did not say whether the order was lifted, but stated that SM was reminded in June 2014 to secure DPWH clearance for any construction or improvement at the coastal road.

SETBACK

Under the building code, an eight-meter setback is required for structures built along newly developed roads. This setback area is supposed to be vacant and free from any obstruction.

SM’s failure to provide an eight-meter setback from the coastal road was brought to the DPWH-7’s attention by a top Public Works official who passed by the area and noticed the violation, Raya said in his report.

He added that Director Canlas informed the OBO about the violations in a letter dated Aug. 28, 2014.

City Engineer and Building Official Jose Marie Poblete said a partial occupancy permit was issued to SM, “which by the way is allowed, because not all of the floors have been completed during the previous inspection.”

Poblete said SM can continue working on the other parts of their building since it’s provided under its permit.

Once SM informs their office that they are ready for another inspection, this time for the entire building, Poblete said OBO will conduct another round of inspection.

“If found compliant with the building requirements, we will give them an occupancy permit for the remaining part, upon payment of permit fees,” Poblete said.

An occupancy permit is issued when a building or structure is declared by OBO as fit for occupancy or habitation upon finding of compliance with requirements, he explained.

TRAFFIC

Meanwhile, the traffic situation at the South Road Properties (SRP) eased yesterday, two days after the grand opening of SM Seaside City Cebu.

Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) department head Rafael Yap said traffic buildup was observed only at the junction of Mambaling going to the SRP.

CCTO operations chief Joy Tumulak said one of the reasons for the traffic buildup is the ongoing asphalting of Vestil St., or the Mambaling Access Road. The project is being undertaken by SM Prime Holdings, Inc.

“What’s happening now is that the road and the entrance to the mall is not leveled. The mall’s entryway is going up so vehicles would have to slow down,” Tumulak said in Cebuano.

He said he already raised the concern with the mall’s management, which agreed to put up a steel plate between the asphalted road and the entrance of the mall.

Vehicle parking is also not a problem in the area anymore since Tumulak said SM has opened its four-level parking area which can accommodate around 4,000 vehicles.

As of yesterday, parking is prohibited along Church Ave.

“This helped in easing the traffic now at SRP because when we allowed parking in Church Ave., it contributed to the traffic (congestion) since some vehicles take longer to enter,” he said.

CCTO will continue to deploy personnel at the SRP to manage the traffic. Yesterday, 15 traffic enforcers were deployed.

Rainy week ahead, says Pagasa

CEBU will continue to experience rains in the afternoons or evenings this week, the weather bureau said.

Alfredo Quiblat, chief of Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa) Mactan, said the rains are caused by the tail end of a cold front brought by the northeast monsoon or amihan.

The northeast monsoon will prevail until February, he added.

No other weather disturbance has been observed within and outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

But Quiblat said the forecast is that at least one typhoon will enter PAR this December.

Temperature is a bit lower at 24 to 31 degrees Celsius from the usual 25 to 32 degrees Celsius.

Despite the prevailing northeast monsoon, the El Niño phenomenon is still in effect in the country.

“The obvious effect is the continuing reduction in rainfall (to below normal and way below normal levels),” he said.

Below normal of rains means 20 percent reduction of rain while way below normal is 60 percent reduction of rain from the average volume.

For November, Quiblat said the amount of rainfall recorded was 24 millimeters of rain. The normal average for November is 158.7 millimeters of rain.

For December, normal average will be 120 millimeters of rain.

Fire razes 23 houses, is the 4th to hit Paknaan this year

About 40 families were displaced and 23 houses were burned down by a fire that hit Zone Camansi in barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City at past 2 p.m. yesterday.

Hundreds of affected residents barely managed to get out of their homes and into safety as the area is crowded with houses, has narrow streets and is located nearly 100 meters away from the main road.

No one was hurt and the fire was put out at 5 p.m. Damage was estimated at P800,000.

Yesterday’s fire was the fourth to hit barangay Paknaan this year.

On March 17, 130 families were displaced and 38 houses were destroyed by a fire that hit sitios Batong, Talong and Camansi.

On July 8, three houses were burned down and one house was damaged in sitio Sili.

Nearly a week later, 35 houses were destroyed in Zone Kamunggay in the same barangay.

In all three cases of fire outbreaks, only a few people were injured, though damage was placed at more than half a million pesos each.

The Mandaue City Fire Department received the alarm on yesterday’s fire at 2:14 p.m., and fire trucks arrived 10 minutes later after being stalled by traffic along Plaridel Street.

The city fire station raised the alarm to Task Force Alpha, which meant they asked for assistance from neighboring towns and cities.

Senior Fire Officer 4 Roy Garcia said their initial investigation showed the fire started in the home of Lorenzo Baunsit.

He said neighbors heard explosions while others saw sparks fly from wires attached to the ceiling of Bausit’s house on the second floor.

SFO4 Garcia said the area has very narrow access roads which barred fire trucks from entering the fire site.

“We initiated a hose relay in which we attached hoses to each other so we can put out the fire,” he said.

He said the area should have at least a dry fire hydrant if it can’t afford re-blocking.

Paknaan barangay chairman Malaquias Soco said they asked the Metropolitan Cebu Water District to put up fire hydrants in the area.

“Pero duna ta’y volunteer fire brigades dinhi unya kada zone duna ta’y gibutang nga fire extinguisher (But we have volunteer fire brigades here and we put up a fire extinguisher in each zone),” Soco said.

Soco said he called up the Mandaue City Social Welfare Office to attend to the fire victims who were temporarily sheltered at the Vamo Gymnasium near the fire scene.

Soco said the barangay council has yet to assess if they can place the sitio under the state of calamity.

“Kay ang pag-declare og state of calamity is at least 25 percent of the barangay’s population, pero morag wala man kaabot (Declaring a state of calamity means that 25 percent of the barangay’s population is affected, but it seems affected residents are not as many),” Soco said.

Soco said he will ask for financial assistance from the Mandaue City government on behalf of the fire victims.

Some of the victims owned the houses through a community mortgage program.

Provincial police raided two suspected drug dens in separate operations in barangay Tangke, Talisay City last Saturday and confiscated at least 103 grams of suspected shabu worth at least P1.2 million.

Police also arrested two women, a 64-year-old man and 22 others during the separate raids.

Remedios Cabardo, 18, and her cousin, Carla Bazar, 28, were arrested in the first raid in sitio Galaxy last Saturday afternoon.

Provincial Intelligence Branch operatives moved in after Cabardo sold shabu worth at least P5,000 to an undercover policeman. Bazar was caught inside the house.

Two large packs and four medium size packs believed to contain shabu were confiscated from Cabardo while 250 sachets of suspected shabu were taken from Bazar.

Both Bazar and Cabardo, who had their children with them, denied the accusations.

Senior Insp. Leo Logronio, team leader of the operation, said that the subject of the operation, a certain Ian, was able to escape after some residents in the densely populated neighborhood shouted that police officers were in the area.

“This is just a follow-up operation to an arrest we made in Toledo City, where we learned that the source of the drugs allegedly came from Tangke, Talisay – from a certain Ian. He was there when a police pseudo-buyer bought drugs, but he (Ian) quickly escaped when he learned of the presence of the police officers in the area ,” Logronio said.

He said 10 other men, who were inside the house, also managed to escape.

At 11 p.m., the PIB team raided another house in sitio Kilawin, still in barangay Tangke and arrested Fernando Gabison, 64, and 22 others.

Five small packs were confiscated from Gabison’s possession.

Some of the 22 men arrested were caught playing moli-moli machines while the others were allegedly caught sniffing shabu in the house.

Police confiscated five small packs believed to contain shabu from Gabison. Three moli-moli machines were also confiscated from his house.

The suspects were detained at the PIB office in Sudlon, Cebu City pending the filing of charges.

From sitio Galaxy, Bazar said she was sleeping when the police raided the house.

“I was awakened by the commotion, and I quickly took my child in my arms. I am only a laundry woman, and never have I been involved in drugs,” Bazar told reporters in Cebuano.

Bazar claimed that she saw men throwing some packs to the house where she was staying and found out that these were sachets of illegal drugs.

She said it never crossed her mind to get involved in drugs because she has four little children.

Bazar has four sons – the eldest is 9 and the youngest is 2 years old.

She said to support their needs, she would do laundry for her neighbors for P250 to P450 a day.

Police said the suspects will be transferred to the Consolacion Police Station detention cell today where they will be held pending the filing of charges.

King” Arthur Villanueva got back on the winning track with a split decision win over Mexican fighter Victor “Spock” Mendez Saturday night in the main event of the Pinoy Pride 34: Back with a Vengeance at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.

The win allowed Villanueva to snatch the vacant WBC International super-flyweight title but the ALA Boxing Gym fighter was not in a celebratory mood after the hard-fought contest.

“I think I have to train harder and improve my skills back in the gym. I need two to three fights before I fight for another title. I have a lot of things to improve,” said Villanueva, who bagged his 28th win in 29 fights with 14 knockout victories.

Mendez dropped to 19W-3L-2D-15K0s.

Filipino judges Benigno Peñafiel (116-112) and Samson Libres (117-111) scored the bout for Villanueva, while Mexican judge Humberto Olivarez had it 115-113 for Mendez.

It was Villanueva’s first win since absorbing a controversial 10th-round technical decision loss to Mcjoe Arroyo in their IBF super flyweight title match early this year.

Villanueva admitted he had a hard time dealing with Mendez’s height advantage.

“It was a very hard fight. He really used his height advantage and I was not able to connect on my jabs,” said Villanueva.

The two fighters were blooded and bruised after the 12-round match.

Michael Aldeguer, CEO of ALA Promotions International, said it was a good comeback fight for Villanueva. He also credited Mendez with putting up a gallant stand.

“It was a good fight, the fans clearly enjoyed it and I also give credit to Mendez for being a very good fighter,” said Aldeguer.

Aldeguer said Villanueva needs to have at least a couple of fights before a possible world title shot.

“For now, we will focus on his rankings since he will surely land in the top 10 in the WBC after this win,” said Aldeguer.

In the co-main event, two-time world title challenger Milan “El Metodico” Melindo (33W-2L, 12KOs) likewise pulled off a split decision win over Mexican Victor Emmanuel Olivo (9-1, 4KOs) in an action-packed co-main event.

According to trainer Edito Villamor, Melindo had to change his game plan since he was not familiar with Olivo’s style.

Olivo was tapped to face Melindo just a few days before the fight after the latter’s original opponent Carlos Fontes backed out.

“Melindo is known as a tactical fighter but was on attack mode against Olivo.“He has to do that kind of style because it was like we were facing a blank wall when Fontes backed out. We were not able to scout Olivo. Good thing he was able to adjust and land big punches,” said Villamor.

The two protagonists figured in a highly entertaining fight but Melindo’s ring savvy carried him to the win.

In his Facebook post, Melindo said the fight was more than just scoring a victory.

“As my advance gift to the boxing fans this coming Christmas, I gave them an enjoyable Pinoy Pride 34 fight. I don’t care what other (people) say, what’s important is that I won the hearts of the boxing fans,” read part of Melindo’s post.

Two judges, Edgar Olalo and Salven Lagumbay, both saw the fight at 96-94 for Melindo, while Edward Ligas had Olivo winning the fight, 96-94.

UNDERCARDS

Cebu City’s Kevin Jake “KJ” Cataraja scored a TKO victory against Indonesian Faris Nenggo in his second professional bout.

Cataraja now has two wins with two knockouts.

AJ “Bazooka” Banal knocked out Emilio Norfat of Tanzania in the third round of their 10-round featherweight bout.

Banal upped his record to 34W-2L-1D-23KOs, Norfat dropped to 25W-7L-0D.

The come-backing Rocky “The Road Warrior” Fuentes (36-8-2, 21KOs) posted a second-round knockout win over Indonesian Afrizal Tamboresi (11W-4L-0D, 6KOs).

LIBERAL Party senatorial aspirant and former PhilHealth director Risa Hontiveros discussed the ideals of slain hero Andres Bonifacio during a forum held to commemorate Bonifacio Day on Nov. 30.

“Bonifacio’s ideals were rooted in empowering locals, ordinary people so we are creating an area for us to air our concerns especially those related to the health sector,” Hontiveros said.

Hontiveros is lobbying for health care as her platform for next year’s elections.

The forum also saw groups from the youth, labor, LGBT and health sectors raise concerns such as lack of recognition of barangay health workers, the rising number of HIV/AIDS cases and the prevalence of cyber pornography in small towns like Cordova.

Hontiveros said the country’s health concerns can be addressed with better doctors, cheaper medicine, empowerment of barangay health workers and health education.

She discussed pending bills in Congress such as the Bibong Barangay Health Workers Program which grants better benefits to health workers, free hospitalization and better education for nurses and doctors.

Don’t work hard to become a hero, work hard because it is the right thing to do.’

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said this during the celebration of the 152nd birth anniversary of Gat Andres Bonifacio at Plaza Independencia yesterday.

The commemoration rite was attended by city officials and different organizations including the Knights of Columbus.

Cebu Historic Affairs Commission chairman Arsenio Pacaña, during his speech, said Bonifacio played a big role in liberating Filipinos.

“As the first president of the Philippine archipelago, Bonifacio revolutionized the hearts of the people during the Spanish period. If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t be enjoying our present victory – a free Philippine government,” he said.

Pacaña pointed out that Cebuanos also mounted strong resistance to Spain.

The mayor led a flower offering at the statue of Bonifacio.

In Colon Street, over one hundred militants brought streamers and placards in a march by Fuente Osmeña.

“The revolution has not yet ended. The Philippines is not yet free from foreign control,” said Niño Olayvar, vice presidnet of Anakbayan- Visayas.

He said Bonifacio was a good model for idealistic youths.

In Mandaue City, a 6:30 a.m. Mass was held at St. Joseph’s Shrine led by Mayor Jonas Cortes.
